On what to look for in EB-1A activities
Here’s a post by immigration lawyer Amber Davis on what to look for in EB-1A activities:
What to consider when looking for events to attend, volunteer at or speak at to build your EB-1A profile:
- Your role at the event - are you being invited to speak, to volunteer and help organize the event or are you simply attending the event? Generally speaking, you want to play an active role at the events you attend (that being said, it’s fine to start off as just an attendee, especially if you’ve just joined an organization and are still learning about it and ways to get involved).
- Who will be at the event - this matters as attending events where you’ll get to meet top professionals in your field can lead you to even more opportunities to get involved in your field.
- The organization that’s running the event you plan on attending, volunteering at or speaking at - is the organization made up of professionals that are also focused on your niche? Are there any open committee positions at the organization to which you can apply? Is the organization made up of top professionals in your field or is membership open to everyone?
Not every opportunity you come across will be ideal nor does every opportunity you take have to be.
Instead, focus on building up towards higher quality opportunities that once you start getting can serve as evidence that shows you are a recognized expert in your field.
